P1 Residential Plumbing: drainage and vents are nearly half the exam
Sanitary drainage at 23 percent and vents at 22 percent dominate the P1. Study notes built from the published weighting.
The P1 Residential Plumbing Inspector exam runs the standard residential format: 60 multiple-choice questions, 120 minutes, open book, per ICC's published certification content outline. Its scope is verifying installation and testing of piping systems, required fixtures, approved materials, flow rates, pressures, and protection of the potable water supply and distribution system, and it reaches into fuel gas piping, combustion air and venting for gas appliances. At 120 seconds per question, the exam is a navigation test wearing a knowledge test's clothes, and the published weighting tells you exactly where to aim.
The P1's weighting has a shape worth exploiting from the first day of study: two areas, sanitary drainage at 23 percent and vents at 22 percent, carry 45 percent of the paper between them. Add water supply and distribution at 21 percent and three areas cover two thirds of the exam. That is the plan. These notes walk all six areas, every subtopic, what each covers per the published outline, roughly how many questions each is worth, and where the clock dies. Keep the conversion in mind throughout: percentage weight times 60 questions gives approximate question count, so 4 percent is roughly 2 to 3 questions and 11 percent is roughly 6 to 7.

Sanitary Drainage, 23 percent: the largest area
Roughly 14 questions, the most of any P1 area, split across five subtopics. Drainage is also where field candidates most overestimate themselves, because service-work fluency with what usually gets installed is not the same as book fluency with what the code requires and where it says so.
- Building drains, sewers, branches and stacks, 8 percent, roughly 5 questions, the heaviest subtopic in the area. The outline's scope is proper sizing and installation of the building drain, building sewer, branches and stacks. Sizing questions here are table work at the end of a text lookup, which makes them chain lookups. Drill the chain, not just the destination.
- Traps, 5 percent, roughly 3 questions. Correct type, size, design, location and installation of traps. You say p-trap under the sink; the code files traps as their own article under sanitary drainage, with the type and design rules candidates assume they remember and frequently do not. Three questions on one article makes this one of the best tab investments in the book.
- Materials, fittings, joints and connections, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Approved drainage materials and the proper fittings, joints and connections between them, including transitions between materials.
- Backwater valves, sumps, ejectors and cleanouts, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Proper installation of all four, and cleanouts is the trade word to watch: cleanout requirements are filed here with drains and sewers, not scattered where instinct might send you.
- Indirect waste systems, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Air breaks and air gaps. Two short terms with a real distinction between them, and questions live in that distinction. Put both on your translation list and know where the indirect-waste material sits.

Roughly 13 questions from just three subtopics, which makes the vent area the most concentrated study target on the P1. If your field experience is service work rather than rough-in, this is where your book time goes, because venting is the material you touch least in the field and the exam weights most heavily.
- Venting requirements, methods and installation, 11 percent, roughly 6 to 7 questions. This is the single biggest subtopic on any of the four residential exams except M1's combustion air. The outline's scope is minimum venting requirements, the permitted venting methods, and installation. Method questions are the deep end: the code recognizes multiple ways to vent a fixture, each with its own rules, and a question can name one in code vocabulary and ask what that method requires. Spend real time learning what the code calls each method so the name alone routes you correctly.
- Sizing, 6 percent, roughly 3 to 4 questions. Proper sizing of the venting system. Pure table-chain work: the question gives you a configuration, and you ride text to table to answer. Timed practice pays off almost immediately here because the chain is repetitive.
- Materials, joints, connections and grades, 5 percent, roughly 3 questions. Approved vent materials, their joints and connections, and proper grades. Grade is a word worth flagging: in the vent chapter it is about slope, and candidates who read it as quality-grade lose time.
Study the drainage and vent areas together, not separately. They are one hydraulic system in the field and effectively one super-area on the exam at 45 percent combined, roughly 27 questions. A candidate fluent in these two areas walks in with nearly half the exam covered by two chapters' worth of navigation skill. A candidate weak here cannot recover elsewhere, because there is not enough elsewhere left.
Water Supply and Distribution, 21 percent
Roughly 12 to 13 questions across five subtopics. This is the potable-water side of the exam, and its center of gravity is protection: keeping contamination out of the drinking water is the public-health job the plumbing inspector exists for, and the weighting reflects it.
- Service and distribution piping, 7 percent, roughly 4 questions, the heaviest subtopic in the area. Proper installation of cold and hot water delivery, identification, sizing and valving. Sizing again means table chains; valving means knowing where the valve requirements sit.
- Water supply and protection, 6 percent, roughly 3 to 4 questions. Potable water supply and distribution piping properly protected against contamination. Here is the area's big translation trap: you say backflow preventer, the code frames the subject as protection of the potable water supply, filed under water supply, not under valves and not under fixtures. Cross-connection thinking, filed under protection.
- Materials, joints and connections, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Approved materials, joints and connections for water supply piping.
- Pressure and volume, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Minimum and maximum pressure and volume requirements. Short lookups, quick points, provided you know where they live.
- Potable water and water treatment, 2 percent, roughly 1 question. Requirements for potable water and installation of water treatment equipment. A familiarity pass is enough.

Roughly 8 to 9 questions across five subtopics. This area is easy to underrate because it sounds administrative, and most of it is not: it is the whole-system material, protection, installation and testing, that applies to every pipe in the house regardless of what runs through it.
- Piping system installation, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Proper installation of all piping systems: support, sleeving, penetrations, and waterproofing of exterior openings. Support spacing is a classic table lookup; know the table's address.
- Piping system protection, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. All piping protected as required from corrosion, stress and strain, freezing and physical damage. Four distinct hazards, one subtopic, one neighborhood of the book.
- Building component damage, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Inspecting the building's structural components for damage caused by the plumbing installation, which is where plumbing meets framing: the notching and boring questions live at this boundary.
- Testing, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. All required tests of installed piping systems conducted. Test questions are reliable exam material: which systems get tested, how, and to what standard of tightness the code text specifies. Look it up rather than trusting jobsite habit, because jobsite habit varies and the book does not.
- Permits, 1 percent, one question at most. When permits are required and how they are issued.
Water Heaters, 12 percent: where the P1 goes into fuel gas
Roughly 7 questions across four subtopics, and the area with the P1's most surprising content: fuel gas. Candidates who mentally filed gas piping, combustion air and venting as mechanical-exam territory get caught, because the P1 outline explicitly includes them in the water heater area.
- Valving, discharge piping and thermal expansion, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Required valving, the temperature and pressure relief valve and its discharge piping, thermal expansion provisions, and pipe sizing. The relief valve and its discharge piping is the classic inspection item in this area, and its rules are exactly the kind of specifics you look up rather than recall.
- Fuel gas piping, combustion air and venting, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Proper sizing of fuel gas piping, combustion air requirements, and required venting for the appliance. This is the crossover subtopic: if you are sitting multiple exams on the R5 path, the navigation you build here transfers directly to the M1.
- Service and distribution piping at the heater, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Clearances, locations, protection, pans and seismic restraint.
- Use and installation of materials, 2 percent, roughly 1 question. Proper use and installation of water heater materials and appliance approval.
Fixtures, 8 percent
Roughly 5 questions across five small subtopics: fixture locations and the minimum required fixtures, approved materials and fixture approvals, installation of fixtures, waste receptors, appliances and appurtenances including clearances, access and sealing, maximum and minimum flow rates and temperature control valves, and installation of faucets, fixture fittings and accessories. None of these subtopics exceeds 3 percent. The right preparation is one pass to learn where fixture material sits in the book, with particular attention to clearance and flow-rate questions, both of which are quick table or text lookups when you know the address and slow wandering when you do not.
The translation traps, collected
- You say p-trap under the sink. The code files traps as their own article under sanitary drainage, covering type, size, design, location and installation.
- You say backflow preventer. The residential code frames it as protection of the potable water supply, filed under water supply, not under valves or fixtures.
- You say cleanout. Filed with building drains and sewers, alongside backwater valves, sumps and ejectors.
- You say the drain line from the water softener or the AC condensate. The code's frame is indirect waste, with air gaps and air breaks, under sanitary drainage.
- You say vent slope. The vent chapter's word is grade.
- You say the pop-off valve on the water heater. The code's frame is the temperature and pressure relief valve and its discharge piping, filed with water heater valving.
A practice protocol for the P1
- Pass one, structure. Map the six outline areas onto your book's table of contents and place your own tabs. Give drainage and vents double the tab density of everything else; that is where 45 percent of your questions will send you.
- Pass two, vocabulary. Build the translation list above and extend it every time you catch yourself using a trade word the code does not. Drill it until the conversion is automatic, because it has to happen before any tab is useful.
- Pass three, timed singles in seconds, weighted by the outline: for every practice lookup you run in fixtures, run three in drainage and three in vents.
- Pass four, chains. Drainage sizing, vent sizing and water distribution sizing are all text-to-table chains. Run each chain repeatedly until the intermediate step stops costing conscious thought.
- Pass five, one full 60-question, 120-minute simulation, minimum. Log every lookup over two minutes and classify it: wrong vocabulary, wrong chapter, or an unexpected chain. Fix the category, not just the question.
Pacing the two hours
The weighting also tells you how the clock should be spent. Roughly 27 of your 60 questions will come from drainage and vents, and many of those are chain lookups ending in tables, which makes them slower than average. The compensation has to come from the light areas: fixtures, permits, potable water treatment and the other one- and two-percent subtopics should be answered fast, from fluency or from a single short lookup, so the banked seconds are available when a vent sizing question sends you through a three-step chain. Answer everything; the exam passes at a scaled score of 75 per ICC's support portal, not a fixed number correct, and a blank scores the same as a wrong answer, so an educated guess on a stalled question is free upside. If a lookup passes the two-minute mark, mark your best answer, flag it, and move; a stubborn question at minute 40 is how candidates arrive at question 55 with no time left.
A final calibration note. The P1 rewards rough-in thinking: drains, vents and supply lines as systems, sized and routed by rule. If your background is service and repair, your instincts about fixtures and water heaters are probably ahead of your instincts about venting methods and drainage sizing, which is precisely backwards from how the exam is weighted. Let the percentages, not your comfort, set the study hours, and check yourself honestly: if you cannot name the venting methods the code recognizes in the code's own words, the vent area is not ready, no matter how many houses you have plumbed.
