A two-week B1 study plan built on the actual weightings
Wall construction is 27 percent of the B1. Study in proportion: a day-by-day plan sequenced by ICC's published topic weights, with objectives and self-tests for every day.
Most B1 study plans walk the code front to back, giving every chapter the same attention regardless of how the exam actually weights it. That approach feels thorough and it is quietly wasteful, because ICC publishes exactly how the B1 Residential Building Inspector exam is weighted, and the distribution is anything but even. This plan studies in proportion to the published outline, and it treats the two skills the exam actually tests, code navigation and sustained speed, as first-class study subjects rather than afterthoughts.
First, the format, because every decision below flows from it. The B1 is 60 multiple-choice questions in 120 minutes, open book, per ICC's published certification content outline. That is 120 seconds per question, and those 120 seconds have to cover reading the question, translating it into the code's vocabulary, navigating to the requirement, reading it, eliminating distractors, and marking an answer. An open-book exam at that pace is a timed navigation test wearing a knowledge test's clothes. The plan below spends its first nine days on the material and its last five on the clock, and the last five are not optional.

Three areas, walls, public safety, and foundations, carry 60 percent of the paper. That is why they get the first five days, while building planning and administration, 12 percent combined, share a single day. This is not a judgment about what matters in the field. It is arithmetic about where the questions come from.

- Budget roughly two focused hours a day on weekdays and three or more on the two weekend days that land inside the window. If your schedule differs, keep the proportions and stretch the calendar; do not compress the final five days, because speed and endurance are the part you cannot cram.
- Study out of the physical book you will bring to the exam, in the edition your exam is written to, from day one. Every hour spent in a PDF or a different edition trains spatial memory you cannot use on exam day.
- Keep a running translation list from the first hour: every time the code files something under a term that differs from the one you use on the jobsite, write both down as a pair. This list becomes your most valuable review document and your day 14 material.
- Every day below ends with a definition of done. Take it literally. If you did not hit it, the next morning starts by closing the gap before new material, because this plan compounds and an early hole widens.
Days 1 and 2: wall construction and coverings, 27 percent
Objective: fluency in the largest area on the exam. Day 1 is structure: lumber quality, wood framing, headers, steel framing, braced wall panels, and fireblocking. Day 2 is skin: masonry, concrete walls, interior coverings, exterior sheathing and veneers, weather-resistant coverings, and exterior plaster and lath. Read for architecture, not memorization. You are learning where things live and what the code calls them, because the book will be open on exam day and the values will be in it.
Two translation traps live in this area and both are worth writing on your list immediately. The residential code does not file anything under shear walls; the term is braced wall panels, and candidates who search under the engineering term burn minutes in the wrong place. And house wrap is a trade name; the code discusses weather-resistant coverings. Watch for more of these as you read. Every pair you capture now is a lookup you will not fumble later.
Self-test for the end of day 2: close the book and write, from memory, the subtopics the wall area covers, then open the book and check yourself. Then have someone name five wall-related items in plain jobsite language and, for each one, say out loud what the code calls it and which part of the book carries it before you flip to confirm. Done looks like this: you can get from a plain-language wall question to the right neighborhood of the book in under 30 seconds, untimed pressure, no stopwatch yet.

Objective: own the area where wrong assumptions are most common. This is egress, emergency escape and rescue openings, exit stairways and ramps, exterior construction, smoke detectors, flame spread, and safety glazing. It is dense with dimensional requirements that experienced people believe they remember and frequently remember wrong, or remember from a different edition. Do not memorize the values. Mark where each one lives, because the book carries the numbers and your job is the route to them.
The signature translation trap of the whole exam sits here: a question about a basement bedroom window is filed under means of egress as an emergency escape and rescue opening, and the room is a sleeping room, not a bedroom. Neither windows nor bedrooms is where the code keeps it. Similarly, tempered glass near a door is safety glazing, filed under public safety rather than with windows or exterior coverings, and stairs live with egress even though what you are physically looking at is framing. Done looks like this: given any of those plain phrasings, you produce the code's term without hesitation, and your translation list has grown by at least a dozen pairs.
Days 4 and 5: footings and foundations, 16 percent
Objective: complete the big three. Day 4 covers footings, stepped footings and special foundations, and columns and piers. Day 5 covers site preparation, foundation walls, and basement walls, including drainage and waterproofing. Footings alone are 5 percent of the exam as a subtopic, so the classic questions, depth relative to frost, bearing, and sizing, deserve deliberate route-building: know exactly where the requirement starts and where its tables sit.
This is also the right area to start noticing reference chains, because foundation questions routinely start in a requirement, jump to a table for the governing value, and then get modified by a footnote or an exception. On the exam a chain like that is one question, not three, and it has to be run inside the same 120 seconds. When you find a chain during study, run it end to end twice so the second hop stops being a surprise. Done for day 5: the big three areas are read, mapped, and on your translation list, which means 60 percent of the exam's weight now sits in territory you have personally walked.
Day 6: floor construction, 14 percent
Objective: floors, and one distinction that costs candidates real points. The area covers lumber quality, joist framing, notching and boring limits, concrete slabs, subflooring, crawl spaces, and draftstops. The distinction: concealed vertical spaces get fireblocking, which you met in the wall area, while large concealed horizontal spaces, like an open floor-truss bay above a finished ceiling, get draftstops. Same jobsite instinct, blocking in a cavity, two different code concepts filed in two different places. Questions live in exactly this kind of fork. Done: you can articulate the fireblocking versus draftstopping split without looking, and you know where each is filed.
Day 7: roof and ceiling construction, 14 percent
Objective: the top of the structure, plus a filing quirk. Rafters, ceiling joists, roof framing, sheathing, coverings and reroofing, insulation and vapor barriers, attics, and fireplaces and chimneys. The quirk: attic ventilation and attic access read like mechanical topics, and the B1 files them with roof and ceiling construction. Candidates with mechanical instincts go hunting in the wrong part of the book. Done: you have mapped roof framing and its tables, and attic ventilation, screening, and access are on your translation list pointing at the roof area.
Day 8: building planning and code administration, 12 percent combined
Objective: cover the small areas in proportion, which means one day, not one week. Building planning carries room and opening dimensions, light and ventilation, unit separation, and building location. Administration carries permits, approvals, and public information. These areas open the book, which is why front-to-back plans overinvest in them. Give them an honest day and move on. Done: you know where habitable-space minimums live, you can navigate the administrative chapter, and you resist the urge to keep polishing the 12 percent while the 27 percent sits idle.
Day 9: tab and mark your book
Objective: convert nine days of reading into a physical navigation layer. Within whatever your certifying body currently permits, and you must confirm the current rules on tabs, highlighting, and handwritten notes in the candidate information before marking anything, tab the book yourself. Place a tab for every area you have studied, then add tabs for the specific tables your own weak spots point at. Place every tab personally even if you bought a pre-printed set, because the placement pass forces one structured read of the entire book, and that read is the actual study value. Done: the book is tabbed, you placed each tab, and you can say from memory what lives behind every one.
Days 10 and 11: timed lookup drills
Objective: convert knowledge into measured speed, because speed you have not measured is speed you do not have. Work in sets of ten: take a plain-language question, start a stopwatch, find the governing requirement in your own tabbed book, and stop the clock when your finger is on it. Log every single lookup in seconds. Anything over two minutes gets a written diagnosis, and there are only three: wrong vocabulary, meaning you translated the question into a term the code does not use; wrong location, meaning you knew the term but went to the wrong part of the book; or an unexpected chain, meaning you found the section but the answer lived a table and a footnote away.
Distribute the drills by the weights, which is roughly three wall lookups, two safety, two foundation, one floor, one roof, one planning per set of ten. By the end of day 11 you want at least 40 logged lookups. Done: a log with 40 or more entries, each with a time, and a diagnosis written next to every miss. The log is the syllabus for day 12, and it is more honest than any practice-test score, because it tells you why you are slow, not just that you are.
Day 12: drill exactly the misses
Objective: repair, not review. Take only the logged lookups that ran long, and rerun each one three times: once slow, tracing why the route surprised you, then twice against the clock. Vocabulary misses go onto the translation list and get drilled as flashcard pairs, plain term on one side, code term on the other, and this is the one flashcard deck that genuinely matters for an open-book exam. Location misses may mean a tab is missing or badly placed; fix the tab. Chain misses get rerun as full chains, requirement to table to exception, as one timed unit. Done: every miss from the log has been rerun clean at least twice.
Day 13: one full-length simulation
Objective: rehearse the actual event. Sixty questions, 120 minutes, one sitting, no pauses, phone in another room, your tabbed book and nothing else. Score it twice: once for answers and once for timing. The timing score matters more, because it is the one the exam actually fails people on. Note where you were at 30, 60, and 90 minutes; at a flat pace those checkpoints are questions 15, 30, and 45, and you want to be running ahead of them, not behind. Note where in the two hours your lookups started slowing, because that fatigue point is real and knowing yours changes how you pace the real thing. Done: a completed sim with a per-checkpoint timing record and a fresh miss log.
Day 14: taper
Objective: protect speed and arrive fresh. Review your translation list once, rerun five favorite lookups to keep the hands warm, confirm your exam-day logistics against the current candidate information, and stop early. You are not cramming facts, because the book carries the facts. The asset you built over two weeks is a fast, reliable route from plain language to the printed requirement, and that asset is best served by rest. Done: list reviewed, logistics confirmed, and you stopped while you still wanted to do more.
Self-diagnostics: how to know the plan is working
- After day 5 you should be able to name the three heaviest areas and their approximate weights without looking, and get from a plain-language question in any of them to the right area of the book without touching the table of contents.
- After day 9 your translation list should hold at least 30 pairs. If it is thin, you have been reading passively; go back through the safety and wall areas hunting specifically for terms that differ from jobsite language.
- After day 11 your median lookup should sit under 90 seconds and your worst under three minutes. If the median is fine but the tail is long, your problem is chains; drill chains. If the median itself is slow, your problem is vocabulary; drill the list.
- After day 13, if you finished the sim with time to spare, you are ready. If you ran out of clock, look at the timing log before panicking: one bad ten-minute stretch is a pacing error you can correct with a checkpoint discipline, while uniform slowness means days 10 to 12 need a second pass before you sit the exam.
What if you only have one week?
Compress the reading, never the clock work. Days 1 through 9 become days 1 through 4 by covering the big three areas in three days and giving floors, roofs, planning, and tabbing one combined day. Days 10 through 14 become days 5 through 7 nearly intact: one day of timed drills, one day of miss repair, one sim, then taper. A candidate who reads everything and never drills the clock is worse positioned than one who skims the small areas and shows up with measured lookup speed, because the exam does not distinguish between not knowing an answer and not finding it in time.
Do I need practice questions too?
They help, with a caveat. Practice questions train recognition and elimination, which is real, but most products score you only on right and wrong, and right and wrong is the least informative number an open-book candidate can collect. If you use them, put a stopwatch on every question and log the time, then feed the slow ones into your day 12 repair session exactly like drill misses. A question you answered correctly in four minutes is a failed question at exam pace, and only a clock will tell you that.
Field candidates
If you have framed, run trim, or inspected for a living, days 1 to 9 go faster than this and days 10 to 14 matter more. Your risk is not the material. It is assuming field fluency equals book-navigation fluency. It does not; the book is filed in different words than the jobsite uses, and the translation list plus the stopwatch are where your two weeks earn their keep.
