E1 Residential Electrical: where the marks sit and why
Branch circuits carry 28 percent of the E1 and service grounding is the heaviest single subtopic. Study notes built from the published weighting.
The E1 Residential Electrical Inspector exam covers electrical services, conductors, equipment, components, fixtures, appliances and devices for one- and two-family dwellings, limited to 120/240 volts, single phase, up to 400 amperes. The format is the standard residential inspector format: 60 multiple-choice questions, 120 minutes, open book, per ICC's published certification content outline. Divide the time by the questions and you get the number that should organize your entire preparation: 120 seconds per question. That is 120 seconds to read the question, translate it into the code's vocabulary, get to the requirement, read it, and mark an answer.
Because the book is open, the E1 is not primarily a memory test. It is a navigation test. The skill it measures is converting the way a question is worded into the vocabulary the code files the requirement under, getting there, and reading accurately, sixty times in a row, without the clock getting away from you. ICC publishes exactly how the exam is weighted, and that weighting is the closest thing to a study plan the certifying body will ever hand you. These notes walk all six areas of the outline, every subtopic inside them, what each subtopic covers per the published outline, roughly how many questions each is worth, and where candidates lose time.
One piece of arithmetic to carry through everything below: a subtopic's percentage weight multiplied by 60 questions gives its approximate question count. Four percent is roughly 2 to 3 questions. Nine percent is 5 to 6. When a subtopic is worth one percent, it is worth a single question at most, and studying it beyond a quick familiarity pass is spending time the heavy subtopics deserve more.

Branch Circuit and Feeder Requirements, 28 percent
The largest area on the E1 by a wide margin, roughly 17 questions, better than one in four. It splits into five subtopics, and none of them is small enough to skip.
- Branch circuit ratings and overcurrent protection, 7 percent, roughly 4 questions. The outline scopes this as verifying overcurrent devices are the correct size and type, in the correct location, and correctly installed. Expect questions that hinge on matching a device to a load and a conductor, which means your lookup lands in requirement text first and a table second. Drill that two-step chain as one motion.
- Branch circuit and feeder calculations, 6 percent, roughly 3 to 4 questions. Per the outline, this is verifying the loads placed on circuits meet the code's provisions for the conductors, devices, materials and equipment installed. These are the slowest questions on the exam because they can require arithmetic on top of a lookup. Budget extra seconds for them, and practice them at the end of a timed block so you rehearse doing math tired.
- Feeders, 5 percent, roughly 3 questions. Conductor size, clearances, location, materials, and the grounding conductors that run with the feeder. Candidates blur feeders into services because both are big conductors feeding panels. The code does not blur them, and the questions live in the difference.
- Required branch circuits, 5 percent, roughly 3 questions. The outline states it plainly: verify that all required branch circuits are provided. This is a checklist subtopic and the fastest points in the area, provided you know the code's list exists and where it sits, rather than trying to reconstruct it from field memory under a clock.
- Panelboards, 5 percent, roughly 3 questions. Rating, circuit identification, overcurrent protection, and correct installation of the panelboard itself. Note that a panel question can also arrive dressed as a working-clearance question, which the outline files under general requirements instead, so read what is actually being asked before you flip.
Study advice for the whole area: this is where lookup chains concentrate. A calculation question can send you from a requirement to a table to a footnote that modifies the table. Practicing single, isolated lookups will not prepare you for that. Drill the full chain against a stopwatch until a three-step lookup feels like one move, because on exam day it has to fit inside the same 120 seconds a one-step lookup gets.

Roughly 12 to 13 questions spread across seven subtopics, the most fragmented area on the exam. Fragmentation cuts both ways: no single subtopic here is huge, but you cannot safely write any of them off, because together they are a fifth of your score.
- Installation methods, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Installation of conductors, cables, raceways and fittings, including underground wiring. Support, protection and routing questions live here, and they reward knowing how the code organizes wiring-method material before you need it.
- Branch circuit required outlets, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Receptacle outlets, lighting outlets and switches provided in all required locations. This is the room-by-room subtopic. The efficient preparation is one careful pass through how the code lays out its outlet requirements so that on exam day you go straight to the room in question.
- Branch circuits, GFCI, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Ground-fault circuit interrupter protection provided in every location that requires it. Notice where the outline files this: under wiring methods and distribution, not under devices. Candidates hear GFCI, think receptacle, and go hunting in the device material first. That mistranslation costs a minute per question, times two or three questions.
- Boxes and enclosures, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Proper type, correctly sized, correctly installed. Box questions frequently involve a table lookup; know exactly where that table lives before exam day.
- Equipment grounding, 3 percent, roughly 2 questions. Bonding and equipment grounding conductor sizes, connections and installation on the equipment side of the system. Keep this mentally separate from service grounding and bonding, which is its own, much heavier subtopic filed under services.
- Flexible cords, 2 percent, roughly 1 question. Proper use and sizing of flexible cords. A familiarity pass is enough.
- Class 2 circuits, 1 percent, one question at most. Low-voltage control wiring, Class 2 circuits and fire alarm circuits. Know the term and where the material is filed. Do not study it deeply; the weighting does not pay for it.
Devices, Lighting Fixtures, and Appliances, 19 percent
Roughly 11 questions across four subtopics. The trap in this area is its overlap with wiring methods: the outline puts where outlets and protection are required under wiring methods, and puts what the installed device must be, its type, rating and installation, here. Two questions that sound nearly identical can live in different areas of the book, and sorting that out in your head before you flip is faster than sorting it out by flipping.
- Switches and receptacles, 6 percent, roughly 3 to 4 questions. Correct type and rating, properly installed. The heaviest subtopic in the area and mostly familiar ground for anyone who has wired a house, which makes it a place to bank time.
- Appliances, 5 percent, roughly 3 questions. Appliance wiring and equipment: correct type, use, installation, and the disconnecting means. Disconnect questions are reliable exam material across trades; know where disconnecting-means requirements are filed and drill that lookup specifically.
- Light fixtures, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Fixtures and fixture wires of correct type and rating, properly installed. Location-sensitive fixture questions reward the candidate who can find the fixture rules quickly rather than debating from memory.
- Heating and cooling equipment, 4 percent, roughly 2 to 3 questions. Space heating and cooling equipment, including air conditioning and refrigeration wiring and equipment, with their disconnecting means. It sounds mechanical. It is filed electrical, and it is on your exam.

Only two subtopics, which makes services the most concentrated area on the E1. Roughly 10 questions drawn from two lookup neighborhoods is an efficiency you should exploit: nowhere else on this exam does an evening of focused book work cover this many questions.
- Service grounding and bonding, 9 percent, roughly 5 to 6 questions, the heaviest single subtopic anywhere on the E1. The outline's scope: the size and type of grounding conductors and electrodes, including their location and installation. If you drill one lookup neighborhood until you can walk it blind, make it this one.
- Service size and rating, 8 percent, roughly 5 questions. Required conductor ampacity, clearances, location, materials and equipment for the service itself. Clearance questions here are table work; ampacity questions are chain work. Both are drillable.
The distinction that generates questions: grounding at the service is not the same animal as equipment grounding on branch circuits, and the outline deliberately puts them in different areas. When a question says ground, spend half a second deciding which side of that line it sits on before you open the book. That half second regularly saves the minute you would burn reading the wrong material confidently.
General Requirements, 10 percent
Six small subtopics, roughly 6 questions total. None of them justifies deep study. All of them justify knowing exactly where they live, because a one-question subtopic answered in 40 seconds is worth the same point as one answered in three minutes.
- Electrical theory, 2 percent, roughly 1 question. Applying basic electrical theory to determine loads and circuit ampacities. This is the rare E1 material that is not a lookup at all; it is either in your head or it is not, so refresh it once and move on.
- Clearances and guarding, 2 percent, roughly 1 question. Required working clearances, location, access and guarding for electrical installations. A classic text-plus-table lookup worth one practice run.
- Connections and splices, 2 percent, roughly 1 question. Conductor connections, splices and terminal identification against code requirements.
- Conductors, 2 percent, roughly 1 question. Correct use, type, insulation, markings and ampacity of conductors generally.
- Project administration, 1 percent. Required permits issued and valid, approved plans and specifications available and retained for the required period.
- Public information and legal, 1 percent. Communicating code intent with proper terminology, general compliance of procedures and materials, suitability per listing and labeling, and the paper trail: inspection reports, correction notices, stop work orders, and data for the certificate of occupancy.
Swimming Pools and Similar Installations, 5 percent
One subtopic, roughly 3 questions: proper wiring installation for swimming pools, spas, hot tubs and hydromassage bathtubs. Candidates from a service or rough-in background often have the least field contact with this material, and it is tempting to write off 5 percent as not worth the trouble. Do not. Three questions drawn from one self-contained lookup neighborhood are the cheapest three questions on the exam once you have spent a single evening learning how that part of the book is organized. Pool requirements cluster tightly, so one well-placed tab and one timed practice pass covers the entire area. Skipping it, by contrast, means donating three questions and then needing to be nearly perfect everywhere else.
The translation traps, collected
The E1's plain-language-to-code-vocabulary gaps are where the clock actually dies. Each of these costs a full wrong-chapter flip if you have not trained the conversion:
- You say the ground rod at the panel. The code discusses service grounding and bonding: electrodes, conductors, their connection and installation. Filed under services.
- You say GFCI outlets in the bathroom. The protection requirement is filed under branch circuits and wiring methods. The device material is where candidates look first and lose a minute.
- You say where do outlets have to go. That is required outlets, under wiring methods and distribution, not under devices.
- You say AC disconnect. The outline files heating and cooling equipment, including disconnecting means, under devices, fixtures and appliances.
- You say low-voltage wiring, doorbell wiring, thermostat wire. The code's frame is Class 2 circuits.
- You say how far from the panel can I stand stuff. The code's frame is working clearances and guarding, under general requirements.
A practice protocol that matches the weighting
- Pass one, structure. Read the outline's six areas against your book's table of contents and place your own tabs, one per lookup neighborhood you expect to visit. Placing them yourself forces one structured read of the book, which is quietly the best study session available.
- Pass two, vocabulary. Build a translation list for every trap above plus every term you catch yourself using that the code does not. This is the one flashcard-shaped task that genuinely matters for an open-book exam.
- Pass three, timed singles. Drill individual lookups against a stopwatch, logged in seconds, weighted toward services and branch circuits because that is where 45 percent of the exam sits.
- Pass four, chains. Requirement to table to footnote as one timed unit, concentrated on calculations, overcurrent protection and service sizing, because those are the subtopics that chain.
- Pass five, a full simulation. Sixty questions, 120 minutes, no pauses. Score your timing, not just your answers, and note the question number where your lookup speed started to sag. That number is your endurance baseline, and a second simulation should move it.
Self-diagnostic as you drill: log every lookup that runs past two minutes and classify the failure. Wrong vocabulary means the translation list needs the term. Wrong chapter means your mental map of the book needs a repair. An unexpected chain means you found a reference path to rehearse. Three categories, three different fixes, and none of them is study more, which is why untargeted review moves scores so little.
Scope note
The E1 scope stops at 120/240 volt single-phase services up to 400 amperes. Time spent on three-phase or commercial service material is time donated to nobody.
